Rohde & Schwarz tutorial provides insights on LTE-Advanced
In order to make LTE a true 4th generation mobile communications technology, it is being enhanced to meet the IMT-Advanced requirements. The necessary enhancements, which are specified in 3GPP Release 10 and later, are known as LTE-Advanced. The comprehensive 90-minute tutorial provides an introduction to the main features currently being discussed and defined by the 3GPP standardization body. This includes carrier aggregation, enhanced intercell interference coordination (eICIC) and enhanced SC-FDMA, as well as MIMO enhancements in the downlink and uplink direction. The impact on test and measurement methodology is also explained. The tutorial concludes with a brief look at the latest features proposed for 3GPP Release 11.

Rohde & Schwarz adds GLONASS and P code for GPS to the GNSS simulator in the R&S®SMBV100A
Rohde & Schwarz has launched two important extensions to the global navigation satellite system (GNSS simulator in the R&S®SMBV100A vector signal generator), making it more versatile and opening up additional applications: R&S®SMBV-K94 for Russia’s new GLONASS system, and R&S®SMBV-K93 for the P code used by the US military as an extension for the R&S®SMBV-K44 GPS option.
Customers will benefit from the easy and cost-effective upgrade from a GPS-only GNSS simulator to a GLONASS and hybrid GPS/GLONASS solution, since no additional hardware is required. In addition, Rohde & Schwarz can present the first P code solution on the market in a cost-sensitive platform such as the R&S®SMBV100A vector signal generator, making it the right solution for production test applications requiring P code.
The options offer the following new GNSS enhancements for the R&S®SMBV100A vector signal generator:
GLONASS (R&S®SMBV-K94 option)
- Simulation of GLONASS satellites (FDMA) with civilian codes at frequencies L1 as well as L2
- Static mode and localization mode
- User-definable almanac file (.agl) with real navigation data
- User-definable location and start time
- Automatic setup of GLONASS scenario with optimum satellite constellation
- Unlimited simulation time with automatic, on-the-fly exchange of satellites based on configurable elevation masks
- Dynamic power control of individual satellites in realtime
- Hybrid GNSS satellite constellations with up to six satellites (if the R&S®SMBV-K44 GPS option and/or the R&S®SMBV-K66 Galileo option are additionally installed) and up to 12 satellites (with R&S®SMBV-K91)
GPS P code (R&S®SMBV-K93 option)
- Simulation of up to six GPS satellites with P code only or combined civilian C/A and P codes; together with R&S®SMBV-K91, 8 to 12 satellites can be configured depending on the codes used. Hybrid configurations are also possible if the respective options are installed
- Static mode and localization mode
- User-definable almanac file (SEM/YUMA) with real navigation data
- User-definable location and start time
- Automatic setup of GPS scenarios with optimum satellite constellation
- Unlimited simulation time with automatic, on-the-fly exchange of satellites based on configurable elevation masks
- Dynamic power control of individual satellites in realtime
- Requires the R&S®SMBV-K44 option
Robust, versatile solution from Rohde & Schwarz provides secure encryption of Ethernet connections
R&S®SITLine, the Rohde & Schwarz SIT product line of broadband encryption devices, has a new member: The new R&S®SITLine ETH50 is the only BSI-approved Ethernet encryptor on the market that is extremely robust and compact (7.6"). The device is intended for the lower performance classes (25 Mbit/s, 50 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s), and its wide temperature range (–20 °C to +70 °C) and fanless design allow it to be used in non-air-conditioned server rooms, on desktops and in moving vehicles.
Like all solutions from Rohde & Schwarz SIT, the R&S®SITLine ETH50 employs state-of-the-art cryptographic methods to ensure utmost security. The device has been approved by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for handling classified information up to the German restricted (VS-NfD) and NATO restricted levels. Different user groups can be defined for the management of network and security settings so that only authorized persons can access confidential data. Another modern security feature is the emergency clear button for protecting all stored information in extreme situations.
In addition to being secure and resilient, the R&S®SITLine ETH50 from Rohde & Schwarz SIT is very efficient: Energy consumption and system costs have been optimized. Plus, a special security token allows users to put the device into operation quickly and replace it easily during servicing. Since investment protection is a key requirement for companies and government agencies, the R&S®SITLine ETH50 has been tested by the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC) and also complies with Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) specifications. Its deployment in complex networks therefore poses no problems. Scalability of the performance classes allows flexible use in line with requirements.
The R&S®SITLine ETH50 with its special features provides a unique solution for applications requiring extremely high security under challenging conditions – including confidential communications between sites or within a site, safeguarding radio relay and satellite links, integrity protection for public transport, or secure connection of mobile units.
Compact EMC test solution
The Rohde & Schwarz solution meets all S-VSWR validation requirements defined in the CISPR16-1-4:2007 standard. This translates into a compact and economical solution for measurements in the microwave range that can be used in the R&D lab.
The benefits of this compact, high-performance system are numerous, including the ability to optimize factors such as radiated spurious emissions during the development phase. This can eliminate complex modifications during the final conformance tests, which significantly reduces time-to-market.
Further test capabilities in the microwave range can be added with software upgrade packages. This allows designers to determine parameters such as radiated power and sensitivity and to carry out free-space, over-the-air (OTA) performance measurements. As a result, comprehensive RF OTA characterization of the wireless device can begin while the device is still in development.
The R&S® TS8996 test system consists of tried-and-tested instruments from Rohde & Schwarz that stand out for their unsurpassed measurement accuracy and reliability: A typical system includes the R&S CMU200 mobile radio tester, the R&S® FSP or R&S® FSU spectrum analyzer, and a signal generator for calibration.
