Applications

The high performance of the R&S®TSML radio network analyzers makes it possible to run more than one R&S®ROMES4 application in parallel. Every R&S®TSML is connected via the FireWire interface with the notebook (cascading, see picture below). Control is made possible by the modular concept of the R&S®ROMES4 software. The combination of multiple R&S®TSML units is very useful for a common application in order to implement fast handover analysis and neighborhood analysis.

The following combinations are possible:

R&S®TSML Radio Network Analyzer Applications

Why is a radio network analyzer needed at all?

  • Measurement speed and accuracy are considerably higher than what mobile phones can deliver in order to represent the real physical nature
  • Not only RF level scanning, but in addition demodulation of BCH (i.e. layer 3) Conclusion: independent from network registration and SIM card
  • Spectrum analysis provides detection of external interferences
  • Higher level accuracy, use as reference to mobile phones measurements
  • The reason for an abnormal end of call (dropped call) can never be found by the mobile phone affected
  • Mobile phones can only “see” what the base station tells them to see
    • Hidden neighborhoods
    • Pilot pollution and interference causes are not detectable
  • Limited channels/carriers (one carrier per mobile and SIM card)
  • Layer 1 and layer 2 decoding for better troubleshooting
  • Spectrum analysis provides detection of external interferences
  • No SIM card identification is required
    • No costs
    • No capacity is allocated
  • Failure of a mobile phone leads to data loss
  • Measurements are independent of mobile chipsets and provide unbiased reference data
  • Higher level and time accuracy compared to mobile phone-based measurements
    • Calibration is possible
  • Use of only one unit for different networks and applications
  • Cheaper compared to many dedicated units
